Beschreibung

Modern technical systems get increasingly complex and are operated more and more in an unstructured, natural environment. The challenge in designing such systems is that their behaviour cannot be pre-defined for all possible scenarios, especially if every possible fault is considered. It is thus an actual computer engineering topic to make a technical system itself more robust and flexible to cope with unforeseen situations. The research direction of "Organic Computing" addresses these issues by adopting of methodologies of organic systems such as the autonomous nervous system and the immune system for technical systems. In this way, features like emergence, self-organisation as well as a more robust behaviour should be achieved such that a technical system may learn to cope with or work around design faults and/or defects.

The seminar Organic Computing addresses some selected topics such as learning under hard safety and real-time constraints as well as suitable systems architectures. The participants of the seminar will have to read and rate some original papers, summarize them and present their results for discussion by an oral presentation and written outline.
